Is Group Therapy Right for You? What to Expect & How It Helps

Written by Jasmine Divinity, Clinical Social Work Intern at TKCC

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit in a room with people who truly understand what you’re going through?

For many people who are curious about group therapy, the biggest question is whether sharing personal experiences with others could actually support their healing.

One of the most powerful aspects of therapy groups is the realization that you are not alone—and that your experiences make sense. Many people move through the world feeling misunderstood, dismissed, or even invalidated when they try to talk about their struggles. Over time, this can cause people to question their own feelings or believe their reactions are somehow “too much” or wrong.

In a group setting, hearing others describe similar emotions, challenges, or trauma can be incredibly validating. It reminds people that their responses are often natural reactions to difficult circumstances and helps break the isolation that keeps many people feeling stuck.

This connection is one of the greatest benefits of group counseling. In therapy groups, the facilitator provides professional guidance and structure, while participants also learn from one another’s lived experiences, perspectives, and coping strategies. A peer’s story or insight can sometimes resonate just as strongly as something shared by a therapist.

Being surrounded by others who are actively working toward healing often creates a powerful sense of encouragement and understanding.

There is no single format for therapy groups. Different groups may focus on different goals, such as:

  • Psychoeducation, where participants learn about mental health concepts and practical coping skills

  • Structured activities that help people explore emotions or strengthen communication

  • Discussion-based groups that allow participants to share openly and reflect together

  • A combination of several approaches depending on the needs of the group

The overall goal of group therapy is to create a safe environment where people can gain insight into their experiences, speak about things they may have never said out loud before, and feel supported while doing so.

As people begin opening up and listening to one another, something powerful often happens. Stories connect, emotions that once felt isolating begin to make sense, and participants start to see their experiences in new ways.Sometimes the most meaningful moment in a group setting is a simple realization: someone else understands. That moment of connection can encourage vulnerability, spark personal growth, and help people move forward with a greater sense of hope.

In many ways, this shared understanding is what makes group therapy so powerful—it reminds people that healing does not have to happen alone.

If you have ever felt like you’ve been carrying difficult experiences by yourself, group therapy might offer something meaningful: a space to heal, learn, and grow alongside others who truly understand how heavy life’s challenges can feel. Counseling services that include therapy groups can provide support, connection, and guidance for people who don’t want to go through the healing process alone.
